As the industry grows, so does the waste generated from the production process by the industry. One of the by-products of the industry is heavy metals Zn2 +, Cd2 +, Pb2 +, Cu2 + and so on which makes the waste can then pollute the surrounding environment. Considering the danger posed by heavy metal copper, efforts were made to reduce the level of copper waste in the waters with several methods considered efficient to overcome the excess of Cu metal, including the adsorption process. In the adsorption process industry is more often used because it has many advantages, including in the procurement of media more economical and does not cause toxic side effects. The carbon content of water hyacinth is quite high, so the water hyacinth is a suitable material as activated carbon. The initial treatment of water hyacinth by cooking with a solution of NaOH to increase the amount of cellulose as the main ingredient of activated carbon production. Heavy metal Cu in CuSO4 solution can be reduced by contacting activated carbon with variations in concentrations of 2 M, 2.4 M, 2.8 M, 3.2 M, 3.6 M and the contact time is 25, 35, 50, 65, 80 minutes. The purpose of this study was to reduce levels of heavy metal Cu with water hyacinth plants. The results of the analysis of the atomic absorption spectrophotometry method (AAS) that the greater the concentration and contact time, the higher the efficiency of absorption of activated carbon, the Cu content obtained is relatively high at 15.964 mg / L when the activator concentration is 3.6 M with 80 minutes contacting time so that the efficiency of Cu absorption is 42.892%.
